Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday that he is not ruling out the possibility of starting negotiations with Ukraine this winter.
“Our EU Council presidency will, among other things, be partly responsible for the situation in the negotiations, which could begin this winter,” Tusk said in Warsaw.
He added that he wants to talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the matter.
The Polish presidency of the European Council is to run from January to June 2025 under the motto “Security, Europe!”
Ahead of assuming the presidency, Tusk is meeting a series of foreign politicians.
French President Emmanuel Macron is expected in Warsaw on Thursday, and Tusk plans to receive British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and travel to Oslo for a visit at the beginning of the Polish council presidency.
“I am in constant contact with our Scandinavian and Baltic allies, who see Poland and the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union as leaders in future action, the effect of which I hope will be peace,” Tusk said after a meeting German opposition leader Friedrich Merz.
