Ocean Winds (OW) and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Brazil have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance the country’s offshore wind energy capabilities.
The collaboration will utilise OW’s significant global experience, including 18.5GW of total capacity, with 2GW under construction and 1.5GW already operational, to bolster Brazil’s offshore wind sector.
Since 2020, OW has registered five offshore wind energy project proposals with a combined capacity of 15GW with the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA).
The proposals cover the states of Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul.
The agreement is set to align critical factors for the industry’s growth, including sustainable regulatory frameworks, local supply chain strategies and community engagement.
The focus is also on developing a skilled workforce, equipped with the best resources for project implementation and long-term sustainability.
The partnership underscores the importance of investing in advanced technologies and fostering collaboration with academic and industry stakeholders, aiming to position OW as a frontrunner in offshore wind energy development.
UFRN has a longstanding history of collaboration with the energy sector, bringing valuable academic expertise to the partnership.
The joint initiative between OW and UFRN is poised to spur economic growth and generate employment in Brazil’s offshore wind energy sector, with a particular emphasis on workforce development initiatives.
By addressing the industry’s specific skill requirements, the partnership aims to ensure access to a highly qualified workforce, vital for the sector’s sustainable growth and expansion.
OW Brazil and South America business development director Rafael Palhares stated: “For Ocean Winds, prioritising the generation of local value throughout the project life cycle is essential to contributing to social development.
“The most effective way to achieve this is through a collaborative approach that involves all stakeholders committed to the proper advancement of the industry.
“This includes academia, which goes beyond just promoting science; it involves investing resources to ensure that knowledge is accessible through appropriate tools and methodologies.”
