SYOSSET, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Israeli officials have confirmed that a Long Island man, who intended to be at Binghamton University this school year, was killed during the Hamas attack on October 7 of last year.
Officials originally though that 21-year-old Omer Neutra was among the hostages taken but now say that he was killed during the horrific terrorist attacks. Instead, Hamas is keeping his corpse hostage.
Israel confirms murder of deferred BU student
Neutra had been admitted to BU but deferred to spend a year in Israel where he had dual citizenship. During that time, he joined the Israeli Defense Forces.
A memorial service was held for him at the Midway Jewish Center in Syosset today.
“He touched so profoundly so many people, so many places. His memory must be a blessing to us, his family, and to the larger community. Rest in peace my boy, our beautiful son. We, and many people, will never forget you,” said Omer’s Father Ronen Neutra.
A number of Omer’s friends and classmates from Long Island are current BU students.
His family members again demanded that the Israeli government do what is necessary to bring the hostages, living and dead, back to Israel.
