At least 15 people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes on two former schools housing displaced people in northern Gaza, the civil defence force in the coastal strip reported on Thursday.
The Israeli military said on Telegram that the former schools were now used as command and control centres by the Islamist Hamas militia to plan terrorist attacks. It said it had deliberately attacked the buildings.
It added that it had taken numerous measures before the attacks to reduce the risk to civilians.
The statements from both sides could not be independently verified.
The Gaza war was triggered by the massacre of around 1,200 people and and the abduction of around 250 others in Israel by Hamas and other militias on October 7, 2023.
According to Palestinian figures from Thursday, more than 45,100 people have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict. The figures do not distinguish between militants and civilians.
