Germany has recorded a 22% rise in deportations over the first nine months of 2024, official figures showed on Thursday.
The increase in deportations comes amid heated political debates over the issue following the terrorist attack in the western city of Solingen in August in which the main suspect is believed to have evaded deportation to Bulgaria.
In total, the Interior Ministry recorded 14,706 deportations during the period, up from 12,042 over the same timespan in 2023.
The leading recipients of deportees from Germany were Georgia, North Macedonia, Austria, Albania and Serbia.
Germany also resumed deportations to Afghanistan this summer for the first time since the Taliban returned to power.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said recently that deportations to the country would continue, while probing how deportations to Syria can be organized.
