A second attempt to auction the family house of Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has failed, an eyewitness told dpa in Yangon.
“There were some lawyers and journalists in front of the house but no one came to buy” the property, the witness said.
Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was ousted in a military coup in February 2021 and has been in prison since 2022. She previously lived in the lakeside villa where she was under house arrest for 15 years.
The property was originally given to Suu Kyi’s mother, the diplomat Daw Khin Kyi, in 1947, following the assassination of Suu Kyi’s father Aung San, who led the country towards independence.
The villa was first put up for auction by a court in March, with Suu Kyi’s brother Aung San Oo demanding half of the proceeds.
However, it was reportedly on the market for 315 billion kyats ($97 million) and failed to attract bidders.
Ahead of the latest auction, Aung San Oo asked “the court to reduce the price,” a source told dpa, but no bidders emerged.
The 79-year-old Suu Kyi was formerly regarded as a beacon of democracy, but her reputation suffered during her period in office from 2016 to 2021 after brutal military attacks on the country’s Rohingya minority.
Myanmar has descended into civil war since the coup in 2021.
